How to choose the perfect wall decals
Choosing wall decals can be a lot of fun; making Pinterest boards and collecting tabs of things I’ve seen and loved is one of my favourite hobbies! But, when it comes to actually making a final decision, things can get pretty confusing.
If you are experiencing some decal confusion of your own, here’s our guide of how to choose the perfect decals for your little one.
Materials & Quality
First things first - do you care what material your decals are made from? Let’s have a look at the options.
Vinyl This is still the most common material used - synthetic plastic with a self-adhesive backing. They are often one time use only, often leave damage to walls when removed and can be notoriously difficult to apply. The biggest upside with vinyl is price, but you are likely compromising on quality and it’s eco credentials are terrible. You can probably tell, we are not big fans of these. They normally have a shiny finish.
Fabric Not all fabric decals are equal - some will be reusable, others not. The quality of the materials and adhesive can vary, though generally they are more eco friendly, have a more quality finish and are much less likely to damage your walls than vinyl. They have a finely textured, matte finish.
Paper These are less common than either vinyl or fabric. They are probably made from the most eco friendly materials, though they are not likely to be reusable, which means they will likely have a shorter lifespan. They have a smooth, matte finish.
Remember, that no matter the material used, the inks used for printing the designs are also very important in terms of toxicity and fade resistance. Look for a reputable store that makes the decals themselves so you get a good feel for all the materials used and how safe they are to bring into your home.
Design
Now to the fun part: time to make some dreams come true (no pressure)!
Consider the child's interests Think about what they enjoy, such as favourite animals or hobbies. Choosing wall decals that reflect their interests will make their room feel more personal and engaging.
Theme or style Decide if you want to go with a specific theme or style for the room. Popular themes for children's rooms include nature, space and animals. A consistent theme will help create a cohesive and visually appealing space.
Room size and layout Consider the size and layout of the room. If the room is small, choose decals that won't overwhelm the space, but will work around the furniture and existing features. In larger rooms, unless you have a large budget, you may want to choose certain areas of the room for the decals, perhaps 2 or 3 groupings rather than scattering them evenly around the room.
Colour scheme Take into account the existing colour scheme of the room or decide on a new colour palette for the decals. Choose colours that complement the room's overall look and feel. Bright and vibrant colours can create a playful atmosphere, while neutrals and softer pastel tones can create a soothing environment.
Get the child involved If they are old enough, involve them in the decision-making process. Show them different options and let them have a say in choosing the decals for their room. This will make them feel more excited and invested in the final outcome.
Remember, the goal is to create a space that reflects the child's personality and interests while fostering a sense of joy and creativity. Have fun exploring different options and let your imagination guide you in choosing the perfect wall decals for your child's room.
